3 Vehicle Safety Tips For Winter

Updated on October 29, 2011

Getting Winter Ready

No matter how anyone looks at it winter driving is always going to be a pain in the butt. Cold weather driving can not only be a pain but can also prove to be dangerous if not approached properly.

When you head out in your vehicle you need to have a sense of confidence that everything is going to work well on your vehicle.

Below you will find three of many tips that can and will be used in your winter ready vehicle.

Winter Tires

They are not just called winter tires for the sake of calling them that. When it comes to winter tires they are actually designed for extra traction, extra braking and better handling. This will help greatly when it comes to building your confidence.

There will be a snowflake branded on the sidewall to help you recognize a snow tire when you go shopping for them. If you find tires with the snow flake you know they have been proven to have 25 to 50 percent more traction in winter driving.

The other key when it comes to snow tires is keeping them properly inflated so you get the best tire performance and best fuel efficiency as well.

Battery Has To Be Working

When you start dealing with colder weather you will be dealing with a vehicle battery that has reduced power. Because of this it is very important to make sure you clean the connections and make sure they are always tight and free of corrosion.

The bad news is when batteries fail they dont always give you a lot of warning. A good rule of thumb is to make sure you replace your battery at least every three years.

Its okay to take your vehicle in to the shop and get it checked by trained proffessionals. These people will have a much better understanding as to whether you need a new battery or not.

The nice thing is that if you do need a new battery the experts will know exactly what you need.

Wiper Blades

Winter driving can be bad enough but when you cant see properly you really are playing with fire. The problem is damages wipers will not clean your wind shield properly. There are a few things that you should watch for so you know when you need to replace your wiper blades.

1. Watch to see if they are cracked or if the rubber is cut or split up.

2. Pay close attention to the edges to see if they are worn or ragged.

3. Pay close attention to the rubber and make sure its not torn or pulling away.

4. You also need to focus on the blade and wiper arm.

Lots Of Vehicle Safety Tips

At the end of the day these are just a few winter vehicle safety tips.

One of the biggest things to remember when operating a vehicle in the wintertime is you need to use common sense.

Driving on snow and ice is completely different then driving on dry pavement in the summertime. You need to take care of yourself and you need to watch for all the drivers around you.
